On Tuesday 13th October, the future of Healthwatch was a key topic during the House of Lords' second reading of the Health Bill. The Bill currently proposes the closure of Healthwatch at both national and local level.

Peers used the debate to explore the Bill's key measures, raising questions and suggesting areas where amendments may be required.

Many Peers recognised the importance of an independent patient voice, highlighting Healthwatch's role in making sure people's experiences of health and care services are heard and acted upon.

The Bill will now progress to the next stage, with further debate expected at the end of October.

As we wait for the next stage to be debated, Healthwatch Reading’s work continues; it’s business as usual. We continue with our project work, we continue to listen to local communtiies and rediesnts about their experiences of health and social care, to ensure health and care services understand and respond to what local people need.

Our statutory powers and responsibilities also remain unchanged while Parliament considers the Bill.

As we know more, we will update you.
