Report out now: Reducing oral health inequalities for children in Reading

Updated: Aug 14

25 families from a diverse range of backgrounds, with a combined total of 45 children, under the age of 10 years old, living in 3 of the most deprived areas of Reading (Norcot, Church and Southcote wards) spoke to us about their experiences of dental care for their child/children in the past two years.

Families shared their successes but also the barriers and failures that have and continue to prevent them from accessing local dental services their children need to stay healthy. This included families with children who have additional needs. Families also gave suggestions on improvements that are needed.

This project was part of the Core20PLUS Connectors Programme. Core20Plus5 is an NHS approach formed to focus on 20% of the UK population living in the lowest deprivation, focusing on 5 healthcare areas for adults, children and young people. Our project is focused on helping to reduce health inequalities in oral health for children.

Data from an oral health survey of 5-year-old children in 2022 revealed that:

  • 32% of 5-year-olds in Reading have one or more untreated dentally decayed teeth - higher than the national average of 29%

  • 2.5% of 5-year-olds in Reading have had one or more teeth extracted due to dental decay.

You can learn more about the Core 20 Plus 5 approach on NHS England’s website and the Kings Fund website.

Our findings, families' recommendations, and our recommendations will support and advise Reading Borough Council Public Health on the creation of an oral health strategy that is urgently required for all residents of all ages across Reading.
